Annual Competition

On Tuesday evening Libby Smith from Carluke CC gave her judgement on the entries into the Annual Competition. In the Beginners' Print Section Steve Gauld had a clean sweep with Woodcutter, Innocence and Honey Honey - the last being an excellent study of a humming bird in flight collecting nectar.

In the Advanced Section 3rd was Willie Gray with Another Place, 2nd was David Thomson with The Puppeteer and 1st place went to Robert Wilson with, curiously, Puppet on a String. In the Portrait Print Section 3rd was David Thomson with Dapper Gent, 2nd was Willie Gibson's Railway Volunteer while Andrew Wylie's brilliant Evie took top spot. Moving onto the DPIs (Digital Projected Images) in the Beginners' Section Robert McFetridge (Jnr) was 3rd with Harrier, his father, also Robert, 2nd with View from Duart Castle and top spot went to Jean Bousted with Moored. In the Advanced section Robert McFetridge (Snr) was 3rd with Santa Express, while David Thomson's Cast a Spell and Flying Cygnet took 2nd and 1st places respectively. Libby's judging of the images was both very considered and any criticism was always constructive. David Thomson accorded Libby a very well deserved vote of thanks.

Members' Night

Tuesday night was very much a members' night with contributions from Jim Nelson, Jim Barclay and Steve Alexander. Jim Nelson's series of images portrayed ongoing restoration work on local buildings. New Member Jim Barclay showed a series Scottish landscapes.

Steve Alexander then described in detail how he transformed a fairly ordinary portrait shot into something rather special.

Portrait Night

On Tuesday member Andrew Wylie demonstrated his skills in studio portraiture. Portrait photography is Andrew's forte and is his main interest in the hobby. Andrew brought along his neice Allison to model for the session. Allison is well used to having her picture taken by Andrew but initially she was somewhat overawed by the number of members who wished to photograph her but she soon settled and handled the night like a true professional. Andrew demonstrated different lighting set-ups to achieve different highlight and shadow effects and this was appreciated by his audience. All in all this was a very worthwhile evening with upwards of ten members participating and thanks must go to Andrew and Allison for making the evening the success it was. Next Tuesday another members workshop will be held so bring along cameras, laptops, questions and any images you might want help with.

Match an Image

On Tuesday nine members from Lanark visited Lesmahagow Photographic Society for a fun night playing Match an Image with Lesmahagow and Alba Camera Clubs. Forty images were selected from a bank of sixty images and, as usual in this annual event, many of the images projected had the judges scratching their heads to see any possible match. Each club did try to stretch the imagination beyond belief and many a laugh was raised. Alba won the competition scoring 25 points. Lesmahagow came second with 20 points and Lanark brought up the rear scoring 19 points. Many thanks to Lesmahagow for hosting the competition and for the excellent hospitality they provided to their visitors. Next Tuesday is Portrait night at Lanark and members are invited to bring along their cameras to take part.

Annual Portfolio Competitions

On Tuesday Gavin Forrest DPAGB from Clydesdale Camera Club judged both the 'Hugh Shaw Print Portfolio' and the 'Bill Kennedy Projected Image Portfolio' competitions.

The print competition was close run with three competitors all scoring 49 points for their three prints. The winning panel was awarded 50 points and was submitted by Bob Arnott. Bob's prints were of 'Bamburgh Castle', Dunstanburgh Castle' and 'Craster Coast'.

This years winning entry in the 'Bill Kennedy Projected Image Portfolio', was submitted by Dave Thompson. Dave's panel was entitled 'Edinburgh Pub and Grub' and his winning images were 'Deacon Broadie', Mussel Bar', Oz Bar, and 'White Hart' All of Dave's images were taken during a club outing late last year and it is denied that drink and grub were taken at all photograph venues.

Next Tuesday the club visit Lesmahagow.

Next meeting at Lanark is on Tuesday April 5th when Andrew Wylie and Dave Thompson will demonstrate their techniques on Portraiture.

Member's Workshop

Tuesday evening was the hand in night for entries to the club's Annual Print and Projected Image competitions.

To fill the evening a member's wokshop was held and several members brought along laptops and cameras. Numerous issues on cameras, Photoshop software and photography in general was discussed, mainly on a one to one basis, and hopefully answers were provided to the many questions raised.

On Tuesday 8 members from Lanark travelled to Clydesdale Camera Club, Coalburn to participate in a five way competition for the 'Scottish Life Trophy. Clubs Involved were Clydesdale, Carluke, Armadale, Biggar and Lanark. The judge for the evening was Mr John McVie from Dumfries.

Congratulations to Clydesdale who won the competition and thanks also for hosting the event and providing excellent hospitality.

The scores were as follows:-
Clydesdale-210 points, Carluke-207 points, Lanark-196 points, Armadale-183 points and Biggar-182 points.

Lanarks' best images were 'Loch Morar at Dawn' by David Gemmell, and 'Before Dawn' by Robert Wilson, each image scoring 19 points.

In the Beginners PDI (Projected Digital Images) section Loudon Marshall and young Robert McFetridge shared 3rd spot with Lands End NZ and View from Duart Castle. In 2nd place was Loudon again with Weka Pass Express and in top spot was Steve Gauld with a nice photo of the Waverly - Doon the Watter.

In the Beginners Prints 3rd equal were Steve Gauld and Pat Robinson with Done In and Waiting. Steve was 2nd with Simone and Pat was top with Snow and Ice. Bob Arnott took third place with Coast and Farm Entry, and a share of 2nd with Whitby. Willie Gibson took the other 2nd place with Time for Tea and David Thompson was top with a striking monochrome shot - Dapper Gent. Bob Arnott accorded judge Jes Graham (Clydesdale CC) a well deserved vote of thanks for her excellent constructive critique of all the images.

Hunter Kennedy - Photoshop Techniques

On Tuesday evening Hunter Kennedy (Carluke CC), one of Scotland's top amateur photographers, presented a Photoshop masterclass to a very attentive group of Lanark CC members and visitors from Carluke. First of all Hunter, by judicious use of "Layers", transformed a good Highland landscape into a brilliant image. He then demonstrated very clever, yet simple techniques to turn an ordinary clear woodland photo into a misty image with all the attention being focussed on an individual tree. Then, still using Photoshop, he transformed a Harris beach photo into a very ethereal image where the eye became very much focussed on the breaking waves. It was clear following later chat over tea that everyone had gained a lot from Hunter's step by step guide to using Photoshop to improve, enhance or even transform images from the ordinary to the special. David Gemmell accorded Hunter a well deserved vote of thanks for his most interesting presentation.

SPF Digital KO

On 20th February 36 clubs took part in the SPF Digital KO Competition in Stirling. In the first and second rounds Lanark finished 18th equal. In the Plate section Lanark finished a respectable 9th. Willie Gibson was Lanark's best scorer with "Before Dawn", while Robert Wilson's "Hello" and "The Sirens" and David Thomson's "Cast a Spell" and "Tulips in a Vase" did well. Lanark overall just missed out winning a medal by one point!

4-Way Print Battle

On Thursday a small group of Lanark members visited Motherwell CC for a 4-Way Print Battle judged by Alistair Sinclair (Pennilee CC). Lanark came in a creditable 2nd behind Carliuke but ahead of both Motherwell and Hamilton. While the top print went to Carluke, Bob Arnott's "The Hunter" and "Winter Rock" scored well.

A/V Night - The Cotswold Way

Tuesday night was an A/V night with club member David Gemmell putting on three shows.

The first was very much a photo-journal of David and his wife Louise's 100 mile Cotswold Way walk in July last year. A wide range of scenes were depicted ranging from pleasant countryside views to pretty shots of quintessential English village architecture.

Following the talk a competition to discover who possessed the best observational powers resulted in a tie between Robert Wilson and Steve Alexander - with, by the way, very low scores! David then presented two more A/V shows viz. "Festival Faces" and the snowy scenes of "December 2010".

"Contra-jeur" Fun Competition

The "Fun" competition on Tuesday night was well supported with a total of 25 images entered on the theme "contra-jeur" or "into the light".

Taking good photos into the light e.g the setting sun is not always easy. The images were marked by the members there being no external judge and David Gemmell's "Skye from Morar" was judged 3rd best with Steve Alexander in 2nd spot with "Trees". David Thomson's "Govan Cranes" captured top place.

"A Portrait of Crete" by Bob Collins

Bob Collins (Queen's Park CC) entertained a good turnout of members with his extensive portfolio of prints captured during a holiday in Crete. Sun, sea and sand did not feature in his presentation. Rather his prints, mostly all sepia, depicted traditional country life with some excellent portraits of villagers following a rural and fairly dated lifestyle - but nevertheless appearing more than content with their lot. Bob clearly had a great insight into Cretan history and rural ways. David Gemmell accorded Bob a well deserved vote of thanks.

Bob Copland (Alba CC) was the judge for Tuesday night's 2nd League Competition. Steve Gauld had a clean sweep in the Beginners' Prints section with "Frozen Tree", "Lite Trails" and "Soulful".

Sharing 3rd place in the Advanced Prints were Bob Arnott, Robert Wilson and David Thomson with "Winter Morning", "Black Attitude" and "Harry Potter" respectively. Andrew Wylie's excellent "Evie" took 2nd place with David Thomson's "Looking Out" grabbing top spot.

In the Beginners' Projected Images section John Currie was third with "Deserted" while 1st and 2nd spots went to Steve Gauld with "Brrr" and "Chris". Steve Gauld won't be a beginner for much longer!

In the Advanced Section David Gemmell's images "Castelejo" and "Dead Wood" shared 3rd place, David Thomson's "Peebles" 2nd place, while Willie Gibson's superb "Buttermere" captured top spot. Club President Bob Arnott accorded judge Bob Copland a very well deserved vote of thanks.

GDPU Competition vrs. Hub Singer

A group of Lanark members travelled through to the Hub Singer CC in Clydebank for the 2nd round of the GDPU Inter-club Digital Image Competition. The Judge Neil McGregor (Kirkintilloch CC) commented on the both the high quality and variety of the images. While Hub Singer captured 2nd spot, David Thomson's "Setting Sun" and "Ripples at Sunrise" shared 3rd place. The top spot, gaining the maximum 20 points went to Lanark with David Thomson's "Puppeteer". Robert Wilson's "Girl at Gallery" and "Puppet on a String" also scored well. Indeed a very successful night for Lanark. As always the hospitality at Singer was excellent.

John Duffy Portfolio

For the first meeting of 2011 the weather relented allowing Lanark to entertain a big turnout of members from Clydesdale Camera Club for a social evening. For the main part members and guests viewed the prints accepted for last year's prestigious Glasgow District Photographic Union John Duffy Portfolio. All the prints were marked out of 20. Lanark had earlier entered a panel of four prints and of these Dave Thomson's "North Berwick and Bass Rock" and Robert Wilson's "Tranquility" received 16 and 17 points respectively. Both these images were displayed in an earlier blog (GDPU Projected Image Battle vrs Clydesdale). David Gemmell's "Loch Morar at Dawn" was awarded 19 points just missing out on being chosen as the best print overall.

Members and guests alike then enjoyed a range of A/V shows put together by Dave Thomson, Steve Alexander and Bob Anrnott from Lanark and John Zawadski from Clydesdale.

Fun Night "Still Life"

At last the weather relented allowing members to enjoy their "fun night" PDI competition on the theme "Still Life" This theme was interpreted in many ways ranging from "human statues" to Church spires.

However the winning image was a "traditional" still life entitled "Mirror" - a creative work by Dave Thomson. Dave also captured second spot with "Tulips in Vase" another creative example demonstrating not only Dave's Photoshop skills but also his artistic talent. In third place was Andrew Wylie with "Instant Table Top".

Too Cold!!

It was too cold, and because of the weather warnings considered only sensible to cancel Tuesday night's meeting. Next week is the fun competition on the theme "Still Life/ Table Top" - so members get busy to produce up to four DPIs. The following week is hand in night for the 2nd league competition.

On Tuesday evening members enjoyed viewing all the 80 odd entries into the 1st League Competition. The judge was Dougie Allan from Penicuik Camera Club. In the Beginners Print Section Pat Robinson was third with "I'll tell your Fortune". Newcomer to the club, Steve Gauld captured 2nd and 1st Places with "The Peir" and "Honey, Honey" - this latter picture being an excellent study of a feeding Humming Bird taken in St Lucia! In the Advanced Section Robert Wilson was third with "Woodpecker", Bob Arnott 2nd with "December Morning" while first place was taken convincingly by David Thomson's "Puppeteer". Moving on to the Beginners DPI section young Robert MecFetridge was 3rd with "Sunset", while John Currie took both top spots with "Kermut" anf "Me and Mum" a nice study of a mare with foal. In the Advanced Section Ber Wilson was 3rd with "Luing Puffin", with David Thomson grabbing 2nd and 1st places with "Ships in the Mist" and "Flying Cygnet" respectively. President Bob Arnott accorded judge Dougie a well deserved vote of thanks.

Clydesdale Trophy

A big turnout of Lanark members travelled to Biggar on Tuesday for the judging of the Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy. Four clubs viz. Biggar, Carluke, Lesmahagow and Lanark had each sent ten images to judge Dougie Allan (Penicuik C.C.). All the projected images were of a high standard, and from Lanark Dave Thomson's Puppeteer was one of three to gain top marks. At the final count, however, Carluke prevailed, with Lanark capturing second spot. As always at Biggar the hospitality was great as were the cakes! GDPU Projected Image Battle via Clydesdale. GDPU Judge:- Jim Dyas

On Tuesday evening a large contingent of Clydesdale Camera Club members came over to Lanark for the judging of the GDPU Projected Image Battle. Each club had entered 20 images which were each individually appraised by judge Jim Dyas and given a score out of twenty. Four of Lanark's images viz. Robert Wilson's Tranquility, Puppet on a String and Girl in Gallery and Dave Thompson's Bass Rock did very well. Following the viewing, discussion and scoring of each image Clydesdale beat Lanark by the narowest of margins - 309 to 304. Congratulations Clydesdale! After a vote of thanks to Jim members and visitors alike enjoyed tea and biscuits. Next week sees the judging of the 1st League Competition.

Photoshop Tutorial 02/11/10

On Tuesday evening a good turnout of members enjoyed a Photoshop Tutorial. Bob Arnott, Steve Alexander and Dave Thomson dealt with a range of editing issues. A number of fairly radical techniques ranging from replacing skies to optimising foregrounds were covered. While such strategies can often improve images the reporter feels that there should be a limit to what is deemed acceptable for competition use. Old fashioned slide photography where "what you shot is what you got" certainly had its merits. Nevertheless many thanks to the tutors and students alike for a most enjoyable evening. Next week members travel to Biggar for the judging of the Clydesdale Trophy.

GB Cup- Open Competition

At this weeks meeting members viewed all of the accepted entries and award winners in the recent Great British Cup, sponsored by the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and open to all clubs in the country.

The winning club was Wigan 10, a club who consistently do well in national competitions and salons.

There was a wide variety of subject matter and the quality of the images was excellent.

Of local interest was the fact that one of the judges was Libby Smith of Carluke Camera Club, herself an excellent photographer.

It was a very inspirational show and thanks must go to Rod Wheelans of Dumfries Camera Club for his compilation of the AV Show.

Next week is a Members Workshop and members are invited to bring along images they may wish to improve on or camera handling issues they seek help with

Edinburgh Outing

As the church hall was unavailable for Tuesdays meeting, nine members plus a guest travelled to Edinburgh to try some night photography. Time was spent in Grassmarket, Castle Street, The Mound and Princes Street photographing floodlit buildings. Three beginners were in the company and each added to their photographic knowledge. Fortuneately the weather was dry and clear and all enjoyed the trip. Results will be shown to other club members at a future date.

Members are reminded that next Tuesday 28th October is the hand-in night for the first club league competition.

Audio Visual Shows

Stan Miller accompanied by Lorna McDonald visited the club. Both are members of Alba Camera Club and hold the post of President and Treasurer respectively in the Glasgow and District Photographic Union. Stan is a keen enthusiast in audio visual work and his presentation covered his way in preparing and selecting images for his shows. He had recently been in Glen Coe and having taken a number of photographs he demonstrated to members how he would put the show together using various digital software packages.

Both then entertained members with several AV shows with Stan commentating and Lorna operating the compter and projection equipment. Shows included India, The Black Country Museum, Crete and several in the highlands and islands of Scotland.

Club President Bob Arnott thanked both for giving members a very informative and entertaining presentation.

Next week the club do not have use of the Church Hall and any members wishing to travel to Edinburgh, hopefully to take photographs of some floodlit buildings, should meet outside the church at 7pm.

Meetings will resume as normal at the church on 26th October when members are reminded that they should hand in entries for the first club league competition.

Still Life and Table Top Practical

Tuesday's club night went well with practical demonstrations on Still Life and Table Top Photography.

Dave Thompson demonstrated photographing three apples using a painting with light technique where he lit each apple in turn using a small torch. He then showed members his tequnique in blending the three images together using Photoshop software on the club's computer.

New member Caroline McWhinnie is also interested in making jewellery and sought some advice in photographing her work. Billy Quigley demonstrating a table top light tent, which he obtained for a tenner from a well known electrical goods outlet, then showed members various techniques using available light, a flexible table lamp and on and off camera flash when photographing Carolines jewellery.

The next meeting of the club is on Tuesday 19th October, however the hall is not available to us that night. It is intended to visit Edinburgh hopefully to photograph floodlit buildings. Members who wish to attend should meet at Greyfriars Church at 7pm when transport can be shared using members cars.

Lanark Camera Club-28.09.10.

Tuesday's meeting was an informal evening when the club held a quiz the subject being ‘Where in the World’. Club member Dave Thompson had prepared an audio visual show consisting of twenty two images from places in Europe, North America, South America, India and Australia. Each image depicted either a famous natural or man made landmark and each contained either one or two questions as to where or what the subject was.

Club members each had a question sheet to answer a total of thirty questions each correct answer scoring one point. Needless to say many of the answers raised much laughter and proved that many of us had not ventured far from South Lanarkshire.

The highest score of 23 points was achieved by Robert McFetridge. Second equal with a score of 19 points was Pantea Cameron and Ber Wilson and third equal with a score of 18 points was Willie Gray and Steve Archibald. No point in listing the lower scores to avoid embarrassment.

Thanks to Dave Thompson for his work in putting the show together creating what was an enjoyable and fun evening.

Next week the club will welcome Stan Miller from Alba Camera Club who will give a selection of his audio visual shows.

On Tuesday evening a group of Lanark members travelled to Coalburn for the judging of the Annual Photohunt Competition. Seven teams teams from the Lanark, Biggar, and Clydesdale Clubs had competed earlier this year and their efforts were judged by Gavin Forrest. As Gavin was on holiday Ian Main presented Gavin's notes and scores. A team from Lanark comprising Bob Arnott, David Thomson, Andrew Wylie and Robert Wilson were clear winners with Clydesdale grabbing second spot. Some of Lanark's winning shots are shown.A great evening was had by all. Many thanks to Clydesdale Camera Club for their excellent hospitality. Next week there will be an opportunity for members to hone their "Still Life" photographic skills.

Fun Night - Members Recent Images

The second evening of this session was very informal with members being asked to present a few of their recent images as PDI's (projected digital images). Six members contributed to a very successful evening. Robert Reid showed off some interesting local scenes while Louden Marshall showed photos of "sand sculptures" captured on a recent holiday to Portugal. Billy Quigley showed some nice sunset shots together with some well composed family portraits. David Gemmell presented three panels covering the Edinburgh Fringe, the Glasgow Waterfront and some Algarve scenes. A view of the pageantry of the Edinburgh Festival procession, often from odd angles, was given by Dave Thomson while club president Bob Arnott showed us that you don't have to go any further than Yieldshields in winter to gain prize winning shots.

Opening Night

A good turnout of members enjoyed an informal cheese and wine evening to start off the new session. For the benefit of the established members and a handful of potential new members Club President Bob Arnott gave an introduction to the club and an overview of the new syllabus. Next week members are asked to bring along some of their favourite or recent DPI's or prints to get the ball rolling!

Annual Dinner

Lanark Camera Club members and guests enjoyed their Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes on Tuesday evening. Aileen Gemmell had the honour of presenting the trophies and certificates to the winners. Left to right in the photograph are Bob Arnott, Dave Thompson, Aileen and William Gray.

The winners were:- Advanced Monochrome Print League – Bob Arnott, Advanced Projected Image League – Dave Thompson, Advanced Annual Monochrome Print – David Gemmell, Advanced Annual Colour Print – Dave Thompson, Advanced Annual Projected Image – Dave Thompson. William Gray took all the honours in the Beginners Section winning both the Print and Projected Image competitions in both League and Annual Competitions. The Annual Portrait competition was won by Bob Arnott. In the portfolio competitions Dave Thompson won the ‘Bill Kennedy Trophy’ and Bob Arnott won the ‘Hugh Shaw Trophy’.

The ‘Supreme Award Trophy’ given to the member adjudged to have submitted the best print in the Annual Competition was won by Dave Thompson.

Members enjoyed an excellent evening and thanks must go to the management and her staff at the ‘Woodpecker Restaurant’ for providing such an excellent meal.

Final Meeting - John Zawadski AV Shows

The last night of the session certainly was no anticlimax as members were well entertained and indeed educated viewing a selection of AV shows put together by John Zawadski of Clydesdale Camera Club. John took us through some rather depressing images of Coalburn; his delightful home environment Middleholm: his recent holidays - Rome, Athens and Melbourne; and excellent visualisations of the art of Edward Hopper and its relevance to photography. Finally and most impressive were his series of shows on photojournalism focusing on war coverage by the early photographers Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner to the more recent contributions of Robert Capa. Club President Bob Arnott accorded John a very well deserved vote of thanks. Next week members are looking forward to their Annual Dinner. The next session begins on Tuesday 7th September. Photographic Alliance of Great Britain

Over the past two weeks members have thoroughly enjoyed viewing accepted and prize winning DPI's entered into the PAGB competitions over the past few years. It was great to see such a wide range of photographs from all over the UK including some from both Lanark and Carluke. The season is winding down now but hopefully some members will join in Clydesdale Camera Club's Photohunt this Sunday.

Annual Competitions - 30.03.10.

Last Tuesday’s meeting was the judging of the club’s Annual Competitions by Jim Dyas LRPS from Motherwell Camera Club. In the Beginners Print Section Willie Gray gained first and second places with ‘Lindisfarne Castle’ and ‘Alison Louise’. Pat Robinson was third with ‘Art With a Twist’. In the Beginners Projected Image Section Willie had a clean sweep with ‘Lindisfarne Abbey’ first, ‘Corsewell Lighthouse’ second and ‘Mave at Sunrise’ third. The Advanced Projected Image Section was won by Dave Thompson with ‘Boathouse and Jetty’, Bob Arnott was second with ‘Active Kids’ and Robert Wilson gained third place with ‘Goldfinch’. The Portrait Section was won by Bob Arnott with his print ‘The Hunter’, ‘Nelson by Robert Wilson was second and ‘Leyna’ by Andrew Wylie gained third place.
In the Advanced Monochrome Section David Gemmel’s print ‘Loch Morar at Dawn’ gained first place, Dave Thompson was second and third with ‘Gondolas’ and ‘Tornado’ First and second places in the Advanced Colour Section were won by Dave Thompson with his prints ‘The Bass Rock’ and ‘Rising Sun’. Robert Wilson was third with ‘Woodpecker’
The Supreme Award Trophy given to the photographer judged to have submitted the best print overall in the competitions was won by Dave Thompson, for his winning colour print ‘The Bass Rock’.
President Bob Arnott thanked Jim Dyas for a very thorough, constructive and fair critique on all of the images.
Next weeks meeting will be a show of images from the GDPU Digital Image Salons.

MATCH AN IMAGE

At last Tuesdays meeting, Lanark hosted a 'Match an Image' fun competition with Alba and Lesmahagow Photographic Societies. In these competitions each club has a selection of 40 images from which they can use 30 images. The idea is that a club projects an image and the other two clubs try to match it in colour, shape or form but these rules are subject to variation as the evening progresses depending who can shout the loudest. The judges are chosen, one from each club, and they have to be able to withstand a fair degree of heckling. A point is given to a club if they succeed in projecting a match and a further point is given to the club whose image is considered to be the best.

Lesmahagow won scoring 18 points, Alba came second with 16 points with Lanark last with 15 points.

The evening proved very entertaining and thanks to Lesmahagow and Alba for their participation. Hopefully Lanark will do better next year when the event will be hosted at Lesmahagow.

Next week's meeting will be the judging of the Annual Print and Projected Images.

The club will welcome Jim Dyas, Motherwell Photographic Society as judge.

Annual Competition Entries

Tuesday's meeting was an informal one, the main business being the submission of entries for the Annual Competitions which will be judged by Jim Dyas from Motherwell Camera Club on Tuesday 30th March.

Members also selected forty images for the 'Match an Image' fun competition with Alba and Lesmahagow clubs which takes place at Lanark next Tuesday 23rd March.

To fill the remainder of the evening Dave Thompson and Bob Arnott gave a number of Audio Visual shows which they had recently produced.

The judging of the clubs two portfolio competitions was completed last week. The judge Bob Copeland from Carluke Camera Club gave a very constructive and fair critique on all the entries.

The winner of the 'Hugh Shaw' Trophy which is awarded to the best portfolio of three monochrome prints was Bob Arnott.

The 'Bill Kennedy' Trophy awarded for the best portfolioi of digital projected images on a Scottish Theme was won by David Thompson, his theme being the Edinburgh Festival.

Club President Bob Arnott proposed a well deserved vote of thanks to Bob for the considerable effort he had put in when assessing the images.

Willie Gibson the Competition Secretary was also able to announce the winners of the club league competitions which were as follows:

Willie Gray won both the Beginners Print and Beginners Projected Digital Image League.

The Advanced Colour Print League and the Projected Digital Image League were won by David Thompson.

The Advanced Monochrome Print League was won by Bob Arnott.

4th and Final League Competition

Tuesday evening saw the judging of the fourth and final league competition. Judge Jessie Graham (Clydesdale Camera Club) had clearly spent lot of time perusing the images and as a result had constructive comments to make on all the entries. Billy Gray had a clean sweep in the Beginners Print Section with "Autumn Avenue", "Lindisfarne" and "Alison Louise" taking top spot.

In the Advanced Monochrome Print Section Dave Thompson was 3rd and 2nd with "Watching out to Sea" and "Tornado" and Bob Arnott top with "Carloway Broch".

Bob Arnott was 3rd in The Advanced Colour Prints with "Sandend Beach", Willie Gibson 2nd with "Fringe Princess" and 1st was Dave Thompson with "Rising Sun". In the DPI (Digital Projected Images) Beginner's Section Billy Gray again had a clean sweep with "Family Day Out", "Old Salt Warehouse" and "House with a View". In the Advanced Section 2nd was Willie Gibson with "Ranoch Moor" and Dave Thomson 3rd and 1st with "Bangkok Lady Boys" and "Wave Goodbye".

David Gemmell thanked Jessie for her hard work and constructive and entertaining judging of this (her first) competition. Next week is a Tuition Evening combined with a display of members prints, DPI's and AV Shows. Its also "hand in" for the Annual Competition.

Libby Smith Presentation

Libby Smith from Carluke Camera Club visited Lanark on Tuesday evening. Libby, one of Scotland's top amateur photographers, has long been a good friend to Lanark Camera Club. Tuesday was no exception. Libby, in a very structured way, took members through the importance of using adobe RGB colour settings as opposed to RGB alone. Then she discussed lens choice and depth of field, use of ISO settings, panning techniques, and the creation of HDR images using single RAW files and a free programme Photomatix. A thoroughly engrossing evening which went on well after our usual finishing time. David Gemmell accorded Libby a very well deserved vote of thanks for such a professional presentation. Next week Bob Copeland will judge entries for the Hugh Shaw and Bill Kennedy Trophy competitions.

"Where in Scotland" Quiz

This week club members seemed to thoroughly enjoy a "Where in Scotland" photo quiz compiled by Dave Thomson and David Gemmell. After a second viewing of the 54 images the scores were added up and the winner was Robert Wilson with Ber Wilson not far behind. Next week Jessie Graham (Clydesdale Camera Club) will visit Lanark to judge the fourth and final League Competition.

Fun Competition- Macro?Close-up

On Tuesday 9th February the club held a Fun Competition when the set subject was Macro/Close-up. Members were invited to submit up to four digital images each of which were projected and judged by members awarding each image (other than their own) a mark out of twenty points. Thirty five images were submitted and the critique on each image was led by Andrew Wylie. Other members joined in with their comments, some kinder and more witty than others, and made it an enjoyable evening. The results will be announced at the next meeting.

On Tuesday 23rd February Libby Smith from Carluke Camera Club will visit and give a 'Photoshop Tutorial'. Libby is well known in camera clubs throughout the country for her expertise as a photographer and her knowledge of Photoshop software and this will be a night not to be missed.

Third Monthly Competition

Last Tuesday members viewed the SPF Print Portfolio. Bob Arnott, Dave Thomson and Robert Wilson had images selected for this prestigious portfolio. Well done! This Tuesday saw the judging of the 3rd Monthly Competition. In the Beginners' Digitally Projected Images (DPI) Section 3rd and 2nd spots went to Willie Gray for "Canal at Sunset" and "Braeriach Stop for a Drink". Hanna Fitzgerald took 1st place with a stunning study of "New Lanark" during the recent cold snap. Judge Gavin Forrest (Clydesdale Camera Club) was most impressed by this image. Moving onto the Beginners' prints Pat Robinson's "Dark Eyes" was 3rd with Willie Gray taking both top places with "Still Working" and "Loch Ard". In the Advanced DPI Section the creepy "Brothers Grim" by Dave Thomson was third while Tom Murphy's "Unafloat" and "Frosty Loch" were 2nd and 1st respectively. In the Advanced Monochrome Section Andrew Wylie's "Relaxing" was 3rd and Dave Thomson was 2nd with "Shine a Light". Top spot was captured by Club President Bob Arnott with the "Hunter". Finally in the Advanced Colour Section Dave Thomson was 3rd and 2nd with an almost surreal "Bass Rock" and "Beach Walk".
The top spot went to David Gemmell with his candid portrait of a Portuguese boy "Sergio". Bob Arnott accorded Gavin Forrest a vote of thanks for judging the competition.

Neil McGregor -"Mountain Photography"

Lanark Club members enjoyed an excellent evening of mountain photography last Tuesday when Neil McGregor of Kirkintilloch Camera Club presented his colour slides in Greyfriars Church Hall.. Neil’s pictures illustrated the many moods of Scotland’s mountains through the seasons and revealed something of the pleasures, dangers and the pains experienced by those who climb them. A highlight was a series of pictures captured on an ascent of the challenging Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis in full winter conditions. A brief visit to Chamonix for a look at the Alps concluded Neil’s show. Club President Bob Arnott brought the evening to a close with a vote of thanks.

GDPU John Duffy Portfolio

On Tuesday evening, despite the poor weather, there was a big turnout of members to view the GDPU John Duffy Portfolio. Out of a large number of entries only 51 had been selected. Members were treated to an impressive variety of prints ranging from portraits, though still-life, to landscapes and sometimes to fairly contrived photographic artwork involving overuse of Photoshop.

Three of Lanark's entries were selected for the portfolio with Dave Thompson's "Spire and Bridge" scoring 16 points and Club President Bob Arnott's "Autumn Birches" and Robert Wilson's "Blackrock Cottage" both scoring 17 points out of a maximum of 20.

The West Highland Way

On Tuesday evening Lanark Club member David Gemmell presented an illustrated talk/movie on The West Highland Way. David and his wife Louise completed this fairly arduous walk over 8 days in early May last year. Putting it mildly, they were not blessed with good weather. Nevertheless David captured some good shots along the route, which rolled together into a movie, made for an entertaining evening. A competition to determine who had paid most attention was won convincingly by Tom Murphy who seemed delighted with his prize - a roll of old fashioned 35mm film! Club President Bob Arnott thanked David for his efforts.

2nd League Competition

Last week the club held a "fun" competition where each member could enter four Digitally Projected Images (DPI's) on the theme "Onthe Beach/Shoreline. Dave Thomson's romantic "Sunset" was third, while David Gemmell's "Evening Calm" captured second spot. An excellent beach reflection of Ailsa Craig by Tom Murphy imaginatively entitled "Coast 4" deservedly scooped first place.

This Tuesday, however, was devoted to the judging of the 2nd League Competition. In the Beginner's Print Section Judge Stan Miller (Alba Camera Club) selected Pat Robinson's "Donations Please" and "Concentration" as 2nd and 3rd places respectively while Billy Gray's enchanting "Country Cottage" grabbed top marks. In the Beginner's DPI Section Hanna-Marie Fitzgerald's "Winter in Biggar" was third and Billy Gray's moody "Lindisfarne Abbey" and pin-sharp "Heron" took the two top places.

Moving onto the Advanced Monochrome Section Bob Arnott was third with "Abandoned", Dave Thomson was second with "Gondolas" and David Gemmell came out on top with "Loch Morar at Dawn". In the Advanced Colour Section Bob Arnott, Andrew Wyllie and Dave Thomson shared 3rd place with "Bow Fiddler's Rock", "Jenna" and "New Lanark" respectively with Dave Thomson's "Rockliffe" and "Early Morning Mist" deservedly taking both top places. In the Advanced DPI Section third placed was shared by Tom Murphy's "Little Ladies" and David Gemmell's "Charming" and "Monsarraz". Sharing second spot were Dave Thomson's "Ripples at Sunrise" and Tom Murphy's "Golden Gala". Top place went to Bob Arnott with an excellent action shot "Active Kid". Club President Bob Arnott gave Judge Stan Miller a well deserved vote of thanks.

Social Evening with Clydesdale Camera Club

A fair number of Lanark members visited the newly formed Clydesdale Camera Club in Coalburn for an informal photographic Quiz Night. Both Clydesdale and Lanark members presented testing and amusing competitions based around - "what is it" or "where is it". In the end all the ad hoc teams were winners since everyone had a good time. As an additional surprise Lanark members had the pleasure of viewing Clydesdale's Jessie Graham's and Gavin Forest's panels of excellent prints which attained the authors the Credit Award (CPAGB) and the Distinction Award (DPAGB) respectively in the PAGB Awards Assessments at Stirling last weekend. Congratulations to both.

SPF DPI Portfolio Night

A good turnout of members enjoyed viewing this year's Scottish Photographic Federation's Digitally Projected Image (DPI) Portfolio. Of the 500 or so images entered by clubs throughout Scotland only 151 were considered to be of a standard high enough for inclusion in the Portfolio. While Dave Thompson and Bob Arnott featured well for Lanark, pride of place went to Tom Murphy whose "Fungus" was chosen as one of the top images. Out of a big club entry (circa 25) Lanark Camera Club captured a very respectable fourth place. Next week the club will meet in the Tollbooth for a "fun" DPI competition on the theme "on the beach/shoreline".

Clydesdale Trophy

On Tuesday evening seven intrepidid Lanark Camera Club members headed to Lesmahagow to view the judging of the Clydesdale Trophy. Four clubs viz. Carluke, Lanark, Biggar and this year's hosts Lesmahagow had each previously submitted 10 d.p.i's (Digitally Projected Images) to judge Stephen Lipton from East Kilbride Camera Club. Judge Lipton gave an excellent critique on all the images highlighting one or two to be of very high standard with Carluke's "Tern Hovering" receiving the maximum 20 point score. Lanark's highest scoring image was "Fungus" by Tom Murphy. Despite this effort, however, Carluke won the Clydesdale Trophy quite convincingly aggregating 172 points, with Lanark in second place with 149 points just beating Biggar and Lesmahagow into third and fourth spots respectively. This evening was made special for everybody not only the high standard of images but also by the very thoughtful and entertaining presentation by Judge Lipton. Next week the club will visit Clydesdale Camera Club at Coalburn for an informal evening.

GDPU PROJECTED IMAGE BATTLE.

Last week Lanark Camera Club welcomed members from the recently formed Clydesdale Camera Club the occasion being a Projected Digital Image competition sponsored by the Glasgow and District Photographic Union who run a Projected Digital Image League involving all their associated clubs. Each club submits 20 images to be considered by an independant judge

Congratulations to Clydesdale Camera Club who won convincingly scoring 339 points to Lanark's 305.

The judge for the competition was Mr Alan Wilding and the vote of thanks was given by Club President Bob Arnott.

Next week the club will travel to Lesmahagow Photographis Society for the judging of the Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy. Those attending should note that the venue will be Lesmahagow Bowling Club and not their usual meeting place.

The following week 24th November the club will view the Scottish Photographic Federation's print and projected image portfolios. Members should note that entries for the second of the club's internal league competitions should be submitted that night.

There will be no meetings at Greyfriars on 1st or 8th December. On 1st December the club will visit Clydesdale Camera Club at Coalburn for an informal evening. On 8th December the club will meet in Lanark Tollbooth on High Street as the church and hall will be used for a school childrens pantomime.

First Monthly Competition

There was a big turnout of members on Tuesday night to view the judging of the First Monthly Competition. Both conventional prints and digital projected images (DPI's) had been passed over to judge Mark Dunnigan (Bathgate Camera Club) a number of weeks previously. Pat Robinson boasted a clean sweep in the Beginner's Print Section with "Reach for the Stars", "Masterpeice in Glass" and "Protest". Andrew Wylie took third place in the Advanced Monochrome Print Section with "Leyna", with Dave Thomson in second place with "Walk Alone" while an excellent study of an "Abandoned Croft" by Bob Arnott was first. Moving onto the Advanced Colour Print Section David Thompson captured third place with "Gateway"; Willie Gibson's "Artic Tern" was second and an excellent portait entitled "Thor" by Robert McFetridge took top spot. Robert only this year graduated to the Advanced Section so special congratulations to him.

Finally the judge passed his comments on the PDI's. In the Beginners Section a study of a "Portuguese Church" by Loudoun Marshall was third, while Will Gray took both top spots with "Corsewalll Lighthouse" and "Mave at Shadow". In the Advanced Section David Thompson was second with "China Troop", while Robert Wilson captured third and first places with "Kilchurn Castle" and "Ships Graveyard" respectively.

GDPU Projected Image Battle - Greenock v Lanark

On Thursday 29th October 4 hardy members braved the wind and rain to travel to Greenock for the first of this sessions GDPU Projected Image Battles.

Unfortunately the result was as dismal as the weather with Greenock winning the tie scoring 309 points to Lanarks' 296.

Dave Thompson did save some of our pride however as his image 'Walk on the Beach' achieved the top mark. Well done Dave.

Our next GDPU battle is against Clydesdale Camera Club at Lanark on 10th November.

'My Style of Photography

The club's guest speaker on Tuesday last was Hunter Kennedy from Carluke Camera Club, his subject being 'My Style of Photography'.

Over many years Hunter has been a good friend to the club, having judged competitions, given lectures and Audio Visual Shows and his expertise and knowledge of photography and the pleasant manner in which he delivers his talks has always been appreciated by the members.

Tuesdays presentation was no exception when Hunter displayed over seventy photographic prints all of which were inspirational and of excellent quality. He held the attention of the audience by explaining his thought process when taking many of the pictures and his methods in preparing the prints. Many of the prints displayed have appeared in Photographic Salons throughout the world and have gained Hunter many awards.

Next Tuesdays meeting will see the judging of the first internal league competition by Mr Mark Dunnigan

Members should note that there is no meeting at Greyfriars on Tuesdays' 10th and 17th November as the club are due to visit Clydesdale Camera Club at Coalburn for a GDPU Image Battle on the 10th and on 17th November, we visit Lesmahagow Photographic Society who will be hosting the competition for the Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy involving Lesmahagow, Carluke, Biggar and Lanark.

Meetings will resume at Greyfriars on Tuesday 24th November when members should note that entries for the second internal league competitions should be submitted.

In-house Workshop

Last Tuesday's meeting consisted of some in-house practical demonstrations. Andrew Wylie demonstrated his methods of setting up studio lighting for portraiture with Hanna Fitzgerald, our own attractive member posing as the model. Hanna had brought along her camera and soon reversed roles with Andrew to try her own hand at taking portraits.

Robert Wilson created a table top studio and demonstrated his style of close-up photography.

Pictures taken were then projected and Steve Alexander demostrated some methods of digital manipulation of the images.

An interesting evening and hopefully some lessons learned.

'The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal'

'The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal' was the title of the presentation given to Lanark members who were joined by visitors from Clydesdale Camera Club and members from the Upperward Mountaineering Club at Tuesday's meeting.

The presentation was given by David McLellan assisted by John Donnachie, both from Carluke Camara Club.

David is an active participant in charity funding activities, all of a trecking and mountaineering nature on behalf of McMillan Nurses and other charities.

David gave an excellent slide show accompanied by a very interesting talk on a trek completed by himself and a few friends during 2005. His images gave his audience an excellent insight into the landscape and the lives of the people in this remote part of the world and his pleasant and humourous delivery held everyones attention. His enthusiasm for trecking, and trecking in this part of the world in particular, was obvious as was the compassion he has for the local people, the porters and guides he met on his trip.

The second part of the presentation was an Audio Visial show compiled by John, utilising many excellent images taken by David on the trip, and this was produced to the professional standard that John has always achieved in this media.

Next week the club will hold a practical night, the subjects being covered will be portraiture lighting, close-up and macro photography. Members are invited to bring their cameras to participate.

Photoshop Tuition

On Tuesday Steve Alexander a club member, demonstrated his skills in Photoshop for the benefit of club members.

Steve covered various aspects of manipulation from contrast control, cloning, adding a new and separate sky and answered questions posed by club members.

Thanks to Steve for making it an interesting evening.

Next week the club will welcome David McLelland and John Donnachie from Carluke Camera Club. The subject will cover David's trecking in Nepal and is entitled 'The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal' This is a show not to be missed

'Photograpy My Way'

Mr. Peter Paterson, ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB, was the speaker at last nights meeting.

Peter is currently the President of the Scottish Photographic Federation, and a member of Edinburgh Photographic Society and as can be seen from his awards he is a very proficient photographer. The title of Peter's presentation was 'Photography My Way' and he displayed monochrome images from his early days in photography right up to the present time where his work is nearly all digital image based. The display was nothing short of excellent and Peter's explanations as to his methods, his thoughts when taking his photographs and to the equipment he has used over the period proved very interesting to the members present. The photographs were all inspirational and the presentation will be remembered by members for a long time.

Next Tuesdays meeting will be instructions on Photoshop Layers and Layer Masks presented by Steve Alexander

Tuesday 22nd September

IMAGE SELECTION NIGHT.

Tuesday's meeting was the selection night for digital images and prints that the club will use in the various interclub competitions throughout the session.

Ten members brought along a good selection of digital images for projection but very few prints were produced, this being indicative of the current trend in club photography. More prints will be needed before mid October.

All images were viewed by the club which provided an enjoyable evening's viewing. It will be down to the club selection committee to choose those images deemed best for interclub competition.

Next week the club will welcome Peter Paterson who will give a talk entitled 'Photography My Way' Peter is the current President of the Scottish Photographic Federation and an excellent photographer.

Members should also note that entries for the first internal League Competition should be submitted the following Tuesday - 6th October. The subject is 'Open' and members can submit up to four prints and four Digital Projection Images.

Tuesday 15th February

On Tuesday a Beginners workshop was held at the club. President Bob Arnott outlined methods of resizing digital images for projection purposes explaining the different sizes required for submission to internal club competitions, Scottish Photographic Federation competitions and Glasgow and District Photographic Union competitions all three having some differences. Bob, Steve Alexander, and David Thompson also demonstrated other Photoshop techniques in answer to some members questions.

Billy Gibson demonstrated Print mounting and along with Robert Wilson gave advice and answers to questions on camera technique and handling.

Next Tuesday the members will select images for submission to external competitions. Please bring along as many of your best images as possible

Tuesday's meeting was an informal 'Members Night' when members were invited to share with others any prints, projected images, and audio visual shows that they had recently produced.

It turned out to be an enjoyable evening with nine members displaying work inviting comments from other members. Pleasingly three new members, who only started the club at the beginning of this session, participated showing both prints and projected digital images of a very good standard.

Andrew Wylie took members down memory lane, showing his first prints he entered in club competitions fifteen years ago and those he had submitted in recent years demonstrating how being a member of a club can improve your photography.

Next week a New Members/Beginners Workshop will be held covering subjects such as print mounting, digital image sizing and camera functions and handling.

Opening Night for New Session

On 1st September members met for their first meeting of the new session. As well as a large turnout of current members the President was pleased to welcome three new faces to the club.

The President gave a short talk on what the club had to offer and introduced the new syllabus.

Cheese and wine and a good chat about all things photographic followed and the evening was enjoyed by all.

Next Tuesday members are invited to bring along a selection of their photographs, prints, digital projected images or AV shows to share with other members.

A New Session is About to Start!

Lanark Camera Club's new session begins at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 1st September in Greyfriars Chuch Hall. The syllabus is nearly finalised and, in addition to in house projected image and traditional print competitions, there will be visiting speakers, digital workshops and inter-club competitions. A number of beginners evenings are already planned so any budding photographers out there will be made most welcome. As a curtainraiser the club will be holding its annual exhibition in the windows of the Tollbooth from 22nd to 28th of August.

Dinner and Presentation of Prizes

Lanark Camera Club members and guests enjoyed their Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes on Tuesday evening. Club President Bob Arnott announced the prizewinners and Pantea Cameron had the honour of presenting the trophies and certificates to the winners. Left to right in the photograph are Dave Thompson, Pantea Cameron, Robert McFetridge, Robert Wilson, Bob Arnott and Willie Gibson.

The winners were:- Advanced Monochrome Print League - Dave Thompson, the Beginners' Print League and the Beginners' Annual Print - Robert McFetridge, the Projected Image League - Tom Murphy, The Annual Projected Image and the The Bill Kennedy Trophy - Robert Wilson, the Advanced Colour Print League, the Annual Advanced Monochrome Print, the Annual Colour Print, and the Hugh Shaw Trophy - Bob Arnott. Finally The Annual Portrait Trophy - the Hilston Cup - went to Willie Gibson - Willie's superb "Geisha" also being awarded the "Supreme Award".

What an great evening. Thanks must go to Eileen McGarrigle and her staff at the Woodpecker for providing such an excellent meal and hospitality in such pleasant surroundings.

Slide Show - Bob Copland

Bob Copland of Alba Camera Club entertained Lanark Camera Club members with a traditional Slide Show of his recent trip to Jordan and Egypt. Starting in Jordan members viewed wonderful slides of the epic Wadi Rum landscapes made famous in the adventures of Lawrence of Arabia. Pictures of Petra and the ancient city of the Nabateans followed - truly both wondrous sites (sights!). Then we moved onto cityscapes of Cairo with the pyramids in the far distance and then onto stunning close up photographs of the pyramids and the sphinx. Finally members were then taken further on to see excellent views of the Valley of the Kings containing many of the tombs of the ancient pharaohs.

Photoshop Tutorial Libby Smith

On Tuesday evening Libby Smith from Carluke Camera Club presented an excellent tutorial on Photoshop - specifically geared to increase members' awareness of the best ways to post-process digital images on the computer. Central to her talk was the inherent advantages of capturing images as RAW files rather than as compressed JPEGS where a lot of information especially in very light and very dark areas is lost. Following conversion of the often dull RAW images to Photoshop files Libby nicely described the advantages of "adjustment layers" and "masking" tehniques to bring out the best qualities of an image.

Tuesdays meeting saw Steve Alexander demonstrate step by step instructions in the production of an AV show using PicturesToExe software. Steve took members through the process of selecting images, sizing them properly, adding borders, and showed how the last two processes can be done quickly using Photoshop Actions. Steve also introduced members to 'Audacity', a free software programme, and demonstrated how to use this programme to adjust the length of a piece of music for an AV show, adding periods of silence and fade in and fade out features.

All in all an excellent presentation and thanks to Steve for his time and effort in producing the demo.

Scottish Life Interclub Competition

On Wednesday evening 8 members of the club travelled to Biggar to view the judging of the Scottish Life Competition held this year between Bathgate, Biggar, Carluke, Lanark and Lesmahagow. Each club had entered 10 images for digital projection making 60 images in total. Judge for the evening was Dougie Allan of Penicuik Camera Club. Images were scored individually and in the final tally Carluke came out convincing winners with Lanark in second place. This was a really enjoyable "battle" and thanks go to all the clubs for participating so enthusiastically, the judge for his excellent critique and Biggar Camera Club for organising the evening.

Where in Scotland Competition

Tuesday night was a Scottish Quiz night. Club President Bob Arnott had put together selection of 50 of his own images taken the length and breadth of Scotland. Following the projection of the images Ber Wilson could boast the highest number of correct answers. Well done Ber! David Gemmell gave a vote of thanks to Bob Arnott for creating such an excellent and varied selection of images.

Annual Print and Projected Image Competition

There was a big turn out on Tuesday for the prestigious Annual Print and Projected Image Competition results. Judge for the evening was William Kay - a past member of the club and a very knowledgeable photographer now specialising in graphic art. It was clear from William's comments that he had put a lot of time and effort into preparing his critique. In the Projected Images section 2nd place was shared between Robert Wilson's "Blue Tit" and Bob Arnott's "Driftwood Rockliffe Shore", while 1st place deservedly went to Robert Wilson with "Redpoll". The Beginner's Annual Print Section was won by Robert McFetridge with "Moonlight on Squinty Bridge". Sharing second place were "Cliff Rescue" and "The Quairing" (both by Robert McFetridge) and "Freedom" and "Swallowtail Butterfly" (both by David Clark). Moving onto the Advanced Colour Section sharing 3rd spot were Bob Arnott with "Frosty Beach" and Robert Wilson with "Blackrock Cottage". In second place was Robert Wilson with "Kilchurn Castle" while taking the top spot was Bob Arnott with "Autumn Birches". In the Advanced Monochrome Section second place went to David Thompson with "Spire and Bridge" and in top place was Bob Arnott with "Making Smoke". Finally in the Portrait Section "Wild Man" by David Thompson took second place while "Geisha" by Willy Gibson took top honours. Willy's "Geisha" was considered to be the best print overall and was duly awarded the Supreme Award. Club President Bob Arnott gave Judge William Kay a well deserved vote of thanks

On Wednesday evening a "Match An Image" competition was held between Alba Photographic Society, Lesmahagow Photographic Society and Lanark. Hosts for the evening were Alba. After a very exciting contest Lanark scraped through as eventual winners. Thanks to Alba for their excellent organisation and hospitality.

On Tuesday Neil Mackie gave a showing of all of the accepted images in the 2008 Dingwall Camera Club National Salon. This proved to be an excellent show demonstrating to the members the stadard required for acceptance in this salon. Of interest were images by Neil and Robert Wilson, Neil gaining acceptances in the Natural History Section and Robert's entry being accepted in the General Section. Well done to both and thanks to Neil for giving the show.

Next Tuesday the club will welcome ex member Willie Kay who will judge the club's annual competitions. One to look forward to.

Members received an evenings instruction by two of the club's own members on Tuesday.

Tom Murphy demonstrated his methods of converting a RAW file from his camera using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 software. Tom believes in keeping things simple and he called his method the five mouse click process however with one of his images he managed to convert the image to acceptable standards with just three clicks. All present were impressed with the power and simplicity of the software employed.

Neil Mackie followed Tom showing his methods of conversion using the full version of Adobe Photoshop. Neil is a very keen wildlife photographer and he impressed all members with the improvements he was able to make to several of his wildlife images and a well known landscape image using the software.

Hopefully some of the lessons will have been absorbed by members new to both versions of the software demonstrated.

Bob Arnott proposed a well deserved vote of thanks.

Next Tuesday Neil will give a presentation showing the standards required for successful Salon entries.

Tuesday's meeting was informal to allow members to ask questions or seek advice on any aspect of the hobby. As usual the merits of equipment was raised, one member asking what the pros and cons were relative to image stabilizing lenses. A lively discussion ensued, most members who have these lenses extolling their virtue, whilst the old adage was repeated that the best image stabilizer was a sturdy tripod.

Neil Mackie showed a number of before and after images showing the improvements that can be made to photographs with some simple computer adjustments.

A number of images taken on a club outing to Rockcliffe in Dumfrieshire were also shown, including a short AV show by Dave Thompson.

A demo DVD introduced by Ber Wilson on AV work was also viewed and enjoyed by members.

Next Tuesday Neil Mackie will demonstrate some simple adjustments using Photoshop software. Members are invited to bring along any images they wish to display.

Club Meeting 3.03.09.

On Tuesday members saw the judging of the final round of the club league competitions. The club welcomed Liz Hanson, a professional photographer from Broughton, who gave a very thorough, constructive and interesting critique.

In the Beginner's section 3rd place was taken by Pat Robinson for her print 'Travelling High', a transport scene from her home territory in East London. First and second places were secured by Robert McFetridge with 'Moonlight on Squinty Bridge' and 'Springburn Tram' both taken in Glasgow.

Dave Thompson took first place in the Advanced monochrome section with 'Spire and Bridge'. Bob Arnott gained 2nd with 'Walk in the Mist' and Gordon Campbell was places 3rd with a portrait 'The Party's Over'.

In the Advanced colour section 1st place was taken by Robert Wilson with 'Dancer', 2nd place was 'The Old Harbour Portsoy' by Bob Arnott and Gordon Campbell again attained 3rd place with a very good nature shot 'Teenage Angst'.

The projected digital image section was won by Robert Wilson with 'Blue Tit in Snow' - (Image attached). 'Mushroom', a close-up by Tom Murphy was placed second and Dave Thompson was placed 3rd with 'Sea View'

The league has been closely contested with few points separating the leaders however the following are the winners for the current session:-

Hugh Shaw and Bill Kennedy Trophies

On Tuesday club members enjoyed viewing the entries for two of the Club's most prestigious competitions. Hunter Kennedy from Carluke Camera Club was the evening's judge. The Hugh Shaw Trophy for the best panel of three monochrome prints went to club president Bob Arnott, David Thompson was second and relative newcomer Gordon Campbell took a very creditable third spot - his "Eilean Donan Castle" gaining the highest individual score. Next up for judging was the Bill Kennedy Trophy for a panel of 4 projected images on a strictly Scottish theme. Out of a big entry, there was a tie for third place on the themes "Glen Affric" and "Glen Etive" - both entered by Tom Murphy. Shots captured by David Gemmell at the "Edinburgh Festival" took second place while Robert Wilson took top spot with an outstanding panel entitled "Waterfalls". Judge Hunter Kennedy had clearly put a lot of time and effort into composing his critique and old and new members alike should have gained many useful pointers on how best to present their work. Bob Arnott gave Hunter a well deserved vote of thanks.

Chinese Cycling Adventure - Jim Wallace

The first item on Tuesday night's agenda was the announcement of last week's winners in the "fun" competition on the theme "Transport". Robert Wilson took 3rd place with "Steam Power", 2nd was Neil Mackie with "Tornado" with David Thompson capturing top spot with "Your Carriage Awaits".

The main event of the evening, however, was Jim Wallace's presentation on his recent cycling holiday in China. To reduce his weight burden while travelling Jim rejected his SLR Camera in favour of a Canon Compact - and the results were still of the high standard expected. Arriving in Beijing, Jim was amazed by the amount of traffic and the associated pollution. However, an escape to the Forbidden City allowed Jim and his fellow travellers the chance to breath cleaner air and the opportunity to take some remarkable photographs of the architecture and artifacts abundant in this ancient place. Jim and his party then soon flew South to the sub-tropical city of Guilin - a starting point for the cycling tour of the valley of the Lijiang River. Although often hazy Jim caught the atmosphere of this very beautiful area of southern China with its winding river and intensive agriculture all surrounded by dramatic very steep and pointed limestone mountains. In addition to landscapes, Jim captured many aspects of local culture, food, and the always apparently cheerful locals. After the very informative talk Club President Bob Arnott gave Jim a well deserved vote of thanks.

The second of the club's fun competitions on set subjects was held on Tuesday when the set subject was 'Transport'

Twelve members participated and displayed a good variety of images, some traditional, some displayed considerable manipulation techniques and others were very imaginative and just plain funny.

Neil Mackie kindly volunteered and gave his personal critique on all images.

Scores will be made known next Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday the club will welcome Jim Wallace who will give an illustrated talk on his visit to China.

3rd League Competition

Tuesday night saw the long awaited judging of the 3rd League Competition. Digital images and prints had been handed over to Judge Andy Alexander from Kirkintilloch three weeks previously and Tuesday was judgement day! Again as always scores were out of 20 and very few images received less than 15. In the Projected Images Section David Gemmell took 3rd place with "Onwards and Upwards", while Tom Murphy took 2nd and 1st places with "Low Winter Sun" and "Robin" respectively. The close-up image of the robin was one of the best "bird" images this reporter has seen. Moving onto the Beginners' Prints David Clark was 3rd with "Autumn" and Robert McFetridge was 2nd with "Sunset, Loch Morlich" but taking top spot was Pat Robinson with "Deserved Rest" a simple shot of a bike propped up against a tree! Moving to the Advanced Colour Section Bob Arnott came in 3rd with "Autumn Burn", Willie Gibson was 2nd with "Geisha" while top place went to David Thompson's "Going Nowhere" - a lovely study of Musselburgh Harbour under a glowering sky. Finally in the Advanced Monochrome section - where sadly there were only two entries - Bob Arnott's "Preston Mill" was 2nd and David Thompson was 1st with "Cloister Stroll".

Print Battle

A big turn out of visitors and Lanark Camera Club members alike enjoyed an excellent 4-way Print Battle between Carluke, Motherwell, Hamilton and Lanark Camera Clubs. Judge Dougie Allan (Penicuik Camera Club) gave an entertaining and very helpful critique scoring each print up to a maximum of 20 points. Only 4 prints scored less than 16 indicating the very high standard of entries. Three prints were awarded the top score - two from Carluke (no surprise there) and one (Bob Arnott's "Southend Pier") from Lanark Camera Club. Lanark's next best print was David Thomson's "Ready to Sail". In the end, however, when all the scores were added up Hamilton and Motherwell shared third place, Lanark were second and Carluke were clear winners. Congratulations Carluke! Bob Arnott gave a well deserved vote of thanks to Judge Dougie Allan.

GDPU Print Portfolio

On Tuesday evening members thoroughly enjoyed viewing the GDPU Print Portfolio. Competition secretary Willie Gibson made an excellent job of summarising the accompanying judges critique - cleverly allowing the members the opportunity to add their own comments. Out of hundreds of prints entered only fifty were selected and these included Robert Wilson's "Glasgow's Arc Bridge", and "4 of a Kind" (a brilliant close up study of 4 puffins on the Isle of May) and and Bob Arnott's colourful "Festival Girl". Although the club had no "Winners" as such it was nice to see the club's photographic skills being more widely recognised.
On a different note on the Monday evening a few club members made a long journey only to be hammered by Drumchapel in a Projected Images GDPU Battle! Two of Lanark's images viz. Bob Arnott's "Up, up and away and Tom Murphy's "The Island" however scored well. Next week sees the judging of the 3rd Monthly Competition.

A/V NIGHT

The Spring session started off with a members' audio-visual (A/V) night. Stephen Alexander presented three shows;-a garden in full bloom, Christmas themes and a brilliant "Mouse Valley Walk" - the last clearly impressing everyone that you don't have to go very far from home to enjoy beautiful countryside. David Thomson's colourful "Strathaven Balloons", "Walk Alone" an A/V show featuring the splendid Barcelona architecture, and the poignant "McRae Gathering" all contributed to an excellent evening. To round things off David Gemmell presented an illustrated talk on his recent visit to Hong Kong.

2nd League Competition

On Tuesday evening members of Lanark Camera Club thoroughly enjoyed hearing Jim Dias's comments on the prints and projected images entered into the 2nd League Competition. In the Projected Images Section third place was shared by Dave Thomson's "Neglect" and young Gavin Alston's "Tackled". Tom Murphphy captured both top spots with "Ray of Light" and "Winter Light". Moving onto the Beginner's Print Section Robert McFetridge took third place with "Quairaing" while Dave Clark was second and first with "Harvest Memories" and "Freedom". In the Monochrome Print section Gordon Campbell was third with Eilean Donan", Dave Thomson was second with "Bearded Warrier" while Bob Arnott took top spot with "Making Smoke". Finally in the Colour Print Section Robert Wilson's shots "Red Poll" and "Excluded" were third and second respectively and Bob Arnott was top with "Marina Derwent Water". At the end of the judging Club President Bob Arnott thanked Jim for his excellent critique and for scoring the images and prints.

GDPU Projected Image Battle Airdrie and Coatbridge v Lanark

On Tuesday 9th December eight members travelled to Coatbridge for the second GDPU Projected Image Competition with Airdrie and Coatbridge Camera Club.

The judge for the evening was Graham Johnston from Hamilton camera Club.

Lanark came out winners with a score of 334 points for their twenty images. Airdrie and Coatbridge had a score of 320 points.

The top scoring image was 'Crucifix' a stunning photograph of a Tern hovering in flight, taken by Neil mackie of Lanark.

Many thanks to all members at Airdrie and Coatbridge for hosting the event and for the hospitality provided.

Lanark's next GDPU Projected Image Competition will be agains Drumchapel on a date still to be arranged.

Judging of Photo Hunt

Lanark Camera Club were entertained on Tuesday evening, as guests of Lesmahagow Photographic Society, for the judging of the recently held "Photo Hunt" competed between Lesmahagow, Biggar and Lanark Camera Clubs. The "Photo Hunt" had started in Lanark and finished in Lesmahagow. From clues supplied by the organisers all the teams entered had to find and photograph sixteen sites taking in Symington, Biggar, Broughton, Lamington and Coalburn. The evening proved light hearted and fairly casual with over one hundred and thirty projected images to be scored. A team from Lanark comprising Bob Arnott, Dave Thomson and Steve Alexander captured top spot with teams from Lesmahagow getting second and third places. One of Dave Thomson's images "Biggar Park" scored particularly well. Many thanks to Lesmahagow for organising the "Photo Hunt" and for their excellent hospitality on "Judgement Night".

SPF Portfolio

On Tuesday evening club members very much enjoyed viewing the Scottish Photographic Federation's Print and Slide Portfolio comprising more than 300 images. The slides and prints had been re-created digitally and were viewed using our digital projector. Out of only eight entries from Lanark, four images did well. In the slide section David Gemmell's "Water Fight" and Bob Arnott's "Festival Girl" scored eleven and twelve points respectively out of a possible fifteen. Amongst the monochrome prints Dave Thomson's "Monmartre Steps" and in the Colour Section Steve Alexander's "Lonely Tree" both received a respectable eleven points. It's important to remember that many entries received less than eleven points and consequently were not included in this prestigious portfolio! In the overall club section Lanark's entry was too small but our local rivals and friends, Carluke Camera Club, did very well.

Fun Night - "Flowers"

Camera Club members thoroughly enjoyed their "fun night" on Tuesday where each member was allowed to enter up to four projected images on the theme "flowers". Images varied from detailed "macro" studies of single flowers, to collages, and to subjects sadly outwith the "flowers" theme such as fern fronds and a sea "anemone"! Judging was carried out by the members themselves and the very striking "Sunflower" by Robert Wilson captured top spot. Steve Alexander was second with "Stamens" while Bob Arnott's clever collage "Reflections" took third place. Thanks to Andrew Wylie for his excellent critique.

Lesmahagow Photographic Society 25th Aniversary

Members of Lanark Camera Club had a great evening last Tuesday when they joined with other local clubs to celebrate Lesmahagow Photographic Society's 25th Anniversary celebration. Before the main event of the evening, the audience was entertained with an excellent audio/visual show depicting the Society's first 25 years. Peter Clark from Cannock, West Midlands, a photographer highly respected worldwide, then presented a excellent lecture centred around a wide selection of his monochrome landscape prints. Peter had been inspired in his early days by the work of Ansel Adams and indeed some of his own photographs, captured both locally and inYosemite National Park, compared favourably with Ansel's own work. GDPU Projected Image Battle Hamilton v Lanark

On Thursday 13th November Lanark travelled to Hamilton for the first of their GDPU Projected Image League competitions.

The judge for the evening was Andy Alexander from Kirkintilloch Camera Club.

Lanark won the competition scoring 322 points to Hamiltons 294 points.

The three top scoring images were all taken by Lanark member Tom Murphy. His image, 'The Island' a lovely Scottish landscape gained top marks of 20 points.

Many thanks to all members at Hamilton for hosting the event and for the excellent hospitality provided.

Lanark's next league battle is against Airdrie and Coatbridge Camera Club on Tuesday 9th December.

Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy

This year it was Lanark's turn to host the Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy Competition. Biggar, Lanark and Carluke Camera Clubs and Lesmahagow Photographic Society each entered 10 digital images for appraisal by judge Peter Patterson who on Tuesday evening presented a critique and a score for each projected image. The scores were eventually tallied and Carluke won the Campbell McNair Trophy by a considerable margin. Congratulations! Lesmahagow came second and Biggar were third. The evening's host, Lanark, gained a very respectable fourth place with Neil Mackie's "Crucifix" and Tom Murphy's "Signs of Winter" scoring highly. Lanark Club President Bob Arnott gave the vote of thanks to judge Peter Patterson who had clearly spent many long hours preparing his often helpful and sometimes controversial critique.

Sophisticated digital techniques are beginning to blur the division between photography and creative art. In some ways it seems a pity that the days of old fashioned slide photography where "what you get is what you see" are over.

First League Competition

Tuesdays meeting was the first of the sessions league competitions and the club were fortunate to have Bob Copeland from Carluke Camera Club as the judge. Bob is an accomplished photographer and judge and he gave a very full and constructive critique on all of the photographs submitted.

The Beginner's colour print section was won by David Clark with his print 'Determination'. 'Botanical Surprise' by Pat Robinson gained second place and 'Cliff Rescue' by Robert McFetridge was third.

Dave Thompson won both the Advanced Colour and Monochrome sections with his prints 'Coulter' and 'Chipping Steps' Dave also took third place in the colour competition with 'Autumn'. Bob Arnott was placed second in each competition with 'Evening at Lossiemouth' and 'Mooring'. Third place in the monochrome section was gained by Gordon Campbell with his print 'Sand Dune'.

In the Digital Projected Image competition, first place was gained by a fine landscape 'Signs of Winter' by Tom Murphy, second was David Gemmell with 'Lighthouse' and 'Up Up and Away' by Bob Arnott was placed third. The club's youngest member Gavin Alston had the highest score for a beginner in the competition with a fine sports/action shot 'My Ball'. A good start for him in this his first photographic competition.

Next week the club have will host the 'Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy' competition.

There will be no meeting at Lanark on Tuesday 11th November, when 12 members from the club will visit Lesmahagow Photographic Society for a special; leture to mark their 25th anniversary.

Photohunt

On Sunday 26th October a few club members braved the elements and joined in a photohunt arranged by Lesmahagow Photographic Society. Members were asked to identify locations to photograph from cryptic clues set by Gavin Forrest fom the Lesmahagow club and the route took participants on a trip from Lanark to Lesmahagow via most of the upperward towns and villages. Wind, rain, sleet, snow and flooded roads added to the challenge and the day was enjoyed by all who attended. The results will be judged by Gavin at Lesmahagow on Tuesday 2nd December.

Workshop Tuesday 21st October, 2008.

Last Tuesday's meeting was a workshop on 'Photoshop' software. Steve Alexander, Dave Thompson and Bob Arnott demonstrated several methods in the improvement and manipulation of images. No doubt some members are still nursing sore heads.

Next Week the club will host a four way battle between Lesmahagow Photographic Society, and Biggar, Carluke and Lanark Camera Clubs, the winner of which will be presented with the 'Campbell McNair Clydesdale Trophy'

The competition will be judged by Mr. Peter Paterson, Senior Vice President of the Scottish Photographic Federation

Bill Barr from Carluke Camera Club was our guest speaker on Tuesday evening. Bill is an accomplished producer of Audio Visual shows and he gave us an excellent evenings' entertainment with an impressive variety of ten different shows encompassing Glasgow 'Clown Festival' Edinburgh Fringe Festival, tours of the Western Isles of Scotland, Dingle in Ireland and Beamish Museum. His last two shows were on the life and work of the artist L. E. Lowry and a caricature presentation, the drawings having been done by a personal friend.

Steve Alexander proposed the vote of thanks.

Next week the club will hold the first League competition of the session which will be judges by Mr. Bob Copeland.

The New Members/Beginners workshop scheduled for last Tuesday's meeting didn't quite materialise. Gavin Alston, our youngest schoolboy member, did however get some tuition on camera handling and depth of field matters from Andrew Wylie. The rest of the evening was spent sorting out entries for the club's first internal league competition and choosing digital images and prints for forthcoming interclub competitions.

Next week we will catch up and have a tuition night when efforts will be made to demonstrate answers to questions on Photoshop software.

Tuesday's meeting was the selection night for digital images that the club will use in the various interclub competitions throughout the session.

In past years when colour transparencies were requested it often proved difficult to get a sufficient number of images. This year members brought along 135 images which is indicative of the growth in the numbers of photographs being taken since the advent of digital cameras.

All images were viewed by the club and a small selection committee has been formed to choose those images deemed best for interclub competition.

Next week the club will welcome Bill Barr from Carluke Camera Club. Bill is an accomplished producer of Audio Visual Shows and club members can look forward to a selection of his work.

Bob Avery "Trains of Thought"

Train enthusiast Bob Avery from Carluke Camera Club was our invited speaker on Tuesday evening - his presentation entitled "Trains of Thought". Starting at Central Station in Glasgow Bob took us on a train-spotting trip around the world taking in locations in Pakistan, China, Guatemala, Ecuador, Eritrea, Australia and closer to home Austria, Germany and indeed Scotland. And what spectacular images were displayed! One shot taken in Ecuador depicted a train pulling over-crowded carriages supporting even more passengers (and the ticket collector) on their roofs! Another shot captured in China showed new steam trains hauling freshly won coal from huge deeply terraced Chinese open cast mines. Other shots taken in Cuba showed very old steam locomotives being used to cart waggons of freshly cut sugar cane to the refineries. Modern trains just didn't seem as photogenic as old the locomotives which simultaneously belched out black smoke and white steam as they moved gracefully trough often strikingly beautiful countryside. Sadly the day of steam trains is nearly over - but enthusiasts particularly in Austria and Germany are keeping the old trains going. Bob Avery clearly is not only a train enthusiast but also a very accomplished photographer very able to show off his favourite subject material in the best light and surroundings. At the end of the evening a warm round of applause followed club president Bob Arnott's vote of thanks.
